HOW TO MAKE A DIGITAL STORY USING WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER

Add narration to your movie

You can make your movie more personal by describing in your own words what happens in your movie. The following steps describe how to add narration to your movie.
  1. If the Storyboard view is visible, click View, and then click Timeline.
  2. Move the playback indicator, which appears as a square with a vertical line below it, to a point on the timeline where the Audio/Music track is empty, and where you want to begin your narration.
  3. Click Tools, and then click Narrate Timeline.
  4. If Show options is visible, click it.
  5. To prevent any audio from playing over your speakers while you record your narration, select the Mute speakers check box. This helps to keep unwanted audio or echoes out of your narration.
  6. Under Audio device, click the audio capture device that you want to use. This option is available only for analog devices, and the audio device will usually be the name of the sound card that is installed on your computer.
  7. To adjust the recording level of your narration, speak into your recording device and move the Input level slider to a place on the meter that registers your voice at the volume you want. You'll probably want the slider toward the upper part of the meter, but below the red-colored area.
  8. Click Start Narration and begin to narrate the contents of the timeline.
  9. When you finish your narration, click Stop Narration.
  10. In the File name box, type a file name for your narration, and then click Save.
  11. Click Close.
Windows Movie Maker automatically imports your narration into the current collection and puts it on the timeline at the point on the Audio/Music track where you first began to narrate. Windows Movie Maker saves the file with a .wma (Windows Media Audio) file name extension to the folder you choose.

Tips

  • If you want Windows Movie Maker to automatically stop recording when you reach another audio track on your timeline, select the Limit narration to available free space on Audio/Music track check box before you begin recording your narration.
  • You can wear headphones instead of muting your speakers to keep unwanted audio out of your narration. By using headphones, you can also hear any other audio on your video clip. This gives you a better idea of what your audience will hear when they play your published movie.

Notes

  • If you find that the volume is too low when you play back your narration, and your audio card supports Microphone Boost, verify that Microphone Boost is enabled. For more information, see the documentation that came with your sound card, or go to the manufacturer's Web site.
  • If the playback indicator is at the very beginning of your project, it may be difficult to see the vertical line because it merges with the left border of the timeline. Drag the square at the top of the playback indicator to the right to see it and place it where you want.

The Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to research and distribute information regarding language and culture. The organization is headquartered in Washington, DC in the United States. It was founded as a private a non-profit by means of a Ford Foundation grant, with Stanford applied linguistics professor Charles A. Ferguson as its first director, on February 16, 1959. [1]
In its original incarnation CAL was closely related to the Modern Language Association [2], but it has since come to function independently. One of the center's accomplishments was developing the TOEFL exam for non-native English speakers seeking higher education in the United States.

It collaborates with Georgetown University and George Washington University.

XTIMELINE

http://www.teachertrainingvideos.com/timelines/index.html

There are other timeline apps that seem better suited for promoting a personal project by creating a timeline of all internet activity, including videos, blog entries, and the like. Xtimeline is more of a traditional timeline program and isn’t really breaking any new ground in terms of timeline usability. If Xtimeline had a comparison, it would be to a site like Wikipedia – a place for people to find factual information about a certain topic.
For instance, on the main page is a link to Scarlett Johannson’s timeline. Reading her traditional biography, you might have no idea just how much she worked as a child, but reading her timeline in sequence shows you just how many movies she’s been in throughout her life. This is the advantage of the timeline over your basic encyclopedia entry.
OK, but what can you do if you’re not ultra-famous? Well, as mentioned, it’s a good place to find information but it’s also easy to create timelines as well. You can then embed the timeline other places online, such as your website or blog. There are also groups to join and interesting timelines to view on site, like a traditional social network. The tools are easy to use, if a bit basic, so novices can easily create a timeline of their own in a matter of minutes.
Practical Uses:
  • Find out the life story of a famous figure in an easier to read format than dry, encyclopedic writing
  • Create a timeline of your own life and output as a way of promoting your work (books, paintings, music, etc.)
  • Show how your business has evolved over time and place on your company’s website
  • Outline your Grandmother’s life story
  • Showcase your expertise by creating a timeline about a subject
Insider Tips:
  • Add pictures and links to the timeline. The way to have this rival Wikipedia is by being as authoritative as Wikipedia’s offering, which are loaded with links and rich media
  • Be sure to proofread heavily. Unlike Wikipedia, this is not publicly editable content, so make sure your content is professional and informative
  • Customize your timeline so it resembles your blog, Myspace page, etc.
  • Participate on other people’s timelines to get them to check out yours
What we liked:
  • It’s easy to use – if you know how to use Blogger, you can use Xtimeline
  • Plenty of interesting timelines on the site
What we didn’t like:
  • It can be slow to load
  • The timelines look good but not great. It would be nice if the timelines were slightly more modern
  • There aren’t a lot of users so interaction is minimal and the front page doesn’t update frequently
